Civic Duties and Responsibilities
Citizens have an important role in ensuring the effective, transparent, and accountable functioning of the Grama Panchayat. Along with enjoying their rights and receiving public services, citizens are expected to fulfil certain civic duties and responsibilities.
Major Civic Duties
- Actively participate in Grama Sabha meetings and raise local needs, issues, and suggestions.
- Cooperate with the Panchayat in implementing development and welfare programmes.
- Pay taxes, fees, and other statutory dues to the Panchayat on time.
- Keep public places, roads, surroundings, and water sources clean.
- Cooperate with waste management and sanitation activities.
- Protect public property and Panchayat assets from damage or misuse.
- Follow laws, rules, regulations, and directions issued by the competent authorities.
- Provide accurate information and documents when required for availing Panchayat services and benefits.
- Avoid unauthorized construction, encroachment, illegal dumping, and other activities that adversely affect the community.
- Protect the environment and support activities for conservation of natural resources.
- Report public health, sanitation, environmental, infrastructure, and other local problems to the Panchayat authorities.
- Participate responsibly in social audits and public monitoring of Panchayat programmes.
- Cooperate with officials and elected representatives in the effective implementation of public services.
- Use Panchayat services responsibly and avoid misuse of government schemes and benefits.
Responsible Citizenship
Responsible participation by citizens strengthens democratic decentralization, transparency, accountability, social justice, and sustainable development. Active cooperation between the Panchayat and its citizens is essential for creating a clean, healthy, inclusive, and self-reliant local community.
